How to Convert Concrete Bags to Cubic Yards

The fastest way to convert concrete bags to cubic yards is to work from the finished yield per bag. Packaged concrete is sold by weight, but a concrete project is normally estimated by volume. Those are different measurements. A bag may be labelled 40 lb, 50 lb, 60 lb or 80 lb, yet the useful conversion number is the amount of mixed concrete the manufacturer says that bag produces.

Values in the half-yard and quarter-yard columns are rounded up to whole bags where needed. For example, half a cubic yard is 13.5 cubic feet. At 0.60 ft³ per 80 lb bag, 13.5 ÷ 0.60 = 22.5 bags, so 23 whole bags are needed to reach or exceed the theoretical half-yard volume.

Worked Example: 30 Bags to Cubic Yards

Imagine you have 30 bags of a 60 lb concrete mix and the label states a yield of 0.45 cubic foot per bag. Multiply 30 by 0.45 to get 13.5 cubic feet. Then divide 13.5 by 27. The result is 0.50 cubic yard.
