How to Finish Concrete Step by Step

Finishing concrete is the process of shaping and treating the exposed surface after placement. A good finish is not simply a matter of making concrete smooth. The finish must match the intended use of the slab, provide the required texture, respect jointing details and avoid damaging the surface by working it too early or adding unnecessary water.

The finishing sequence starts as soon as concrete is placed and continues through screeding, floating, waiting for bleed water to dissipate, edging, jointing, final texturing and curing. The exact timing changes with concrete temperature, air temperature, wind, humidity, slab thickness, cementitious materials, admixtures and placement conditions.

1. Prepare Before The Concrete Arrives

Successful finishing starts before the concrete arrives or mixing begins. Forms should be secure, elevations checked, base preparation complete, reinforcement supported, embeds positioned and all finishing tools ready. The crew should know the planned finish, joint layout, placement sequence and curing method.

2. Place Concrete Close To Final Position

Deposit concrete as close as practical to where it will remain. Excessive dragging or moving concrete long distances can contribute to segregation and make levelling more difficult. Work the concrete into corners, around reinforcement and along forms without overworking the mix.

3. Consolidate Where Required

Concrete needs adequate consolidation around reinforcement, embeds, corners and form faces. The method depends on the element and project requirements. Internal or external vibration may be used on some placements, while slab-on-ground work may rely on appropriate placement and finishing methods. Excessive vibration can contribute to segregation, so consolidation should follow the applicable plan and practice.

4. Screed The Concrete

Screeding, also called strikeoff, removes excess concrete and brings the surface to the intended grade. A straightedge, screed board, vibrating screed or other equipment is moved across the forms or guide rails while low spots are filled and excess material is removed.

The goal is not to create the final texture at this stage. Screeding establishes the basic plane of the slab so later floating and finishing can refine it.

5. Bull Float Soon After Screeding

Bull floating follows screeding on many slab placements. The float helps remove ridges left by screeding, fills minor depressions and embeds larger aggregate slightly below the surface. It should be used carefully; excessive floating or repeated passes can bring too much paste and water toward the surface.

6. Do Not Finish Over Bleed Water

Fresh concrete can release bleed water as heavier solid particles settle. If finishing closes the surface while free bleed water is present, water can become trapped beneath a densified surface layer. This can contribute to delamination, blistering, dusting, scaling or other surface defects.

Important: Do not sprinkle water onto the slab just to make finishing easier. Extra surface water can increase the local water-cement ratio and weaken the top layer.

There is no universal number of minutes to wait between finishing steps. On one day a slab may stiffen quickly; on another it may remain workable much longer. 8. Edge The Slab

Concrete shrinks as it dries and cools. Contraction joints create planned weakened planes intended to encourage cracking at controlled locations rather than randomly across the slab. Joint spacing, depth, layout and timing are design and construction decisions, not cosmetic details.

Joints can be tooled while the concrete is plastic or saw-cut after the slab has hardened enough to avoid raveling but early enough to influence shrinkage cracking. The correct timing depends on the cutting method, concrete and conditions.

10. Float The Surface Again If Required

After bleed water has gone and the concrete can support the operation, hand floats or power floats may be used depending on slab size and finish. Floating helps level minor irregularities, consolidates the surface mortar and prepares the slab for brooming or trowelling.

How To Broom Finish Concrete

For a broom finish, allow the slab to reach the appropriate condition after floating and any required trowelling. Draw a clean concrete broom across the surface in consistent passes. The broom direction, texture depth and overlap should be controlled so the appearance is uniform.
