How To Build Concrete Forms In Eight Main Steps

The Exact Method Depends On The Project, But Simple Slab And Pad Formwork Usually Follows The Same Basic sequence.

Confirm Size, Thickness, finished level, edges and any falls before cutting timber.

Recheck dimensions, diagonals, line, level, height and any drainage fall.

What Concrete Forms Do

Concrete Forms Create The Temporary Boundary That Holds Fresh Concrete Until It Can Support Its Own Shape. For A Slab Or Pad, The Forms Define The Edges, Finished Height And Overall footprint. If the forms move during placement, the concrete edge can bow, spread or finish at the wrong level.

Formwork Does Not Need To Be Complicated For Every Small Project, But It Must Be Strong Enough For The Pressure Of Wet Concrete And For Any construction activity around it. Straight boards, sound stakes, secure fixings and proper bracing matter more than decorative appearance.

1. Confirm The Slab Size And Finished Level

Before Building Anything, Confirm The Length, Width, Thickness And Required Finished Surface Level. Also Check Whether The Surface Must Be Flat Or Built To A Fall For Drainage.

Mark A Reliable Datum Or Reference Height So Every Form Board Can Be Checked From The Same Level. This Prevents One Side Of The Form Being Set From A Different reference than the others.

2. Set Out The Corners And String Lines

Mark The Approximate Corners, Then Run Tight String Lines To Show The Form Position. For A Rectangular Slab, Measure Both Side Lengths And Check The Diagonals. Equal diagonals are a useful check that the rectangle is square.

Do Not Rely Only On Visual Alignment. Small errors at the start can become obvious once concrete is placed and edge lines are permanent.

3. Prepare The Excavation And Base

Complete Required Excavation Before Finalising The Form Height. Remove Soft Spots, prepare the subgrade and place any specified compacted base material. A poorly prepared base can settle or move even if the forms are perfectly built.

Important: Formwork Is Only One Part Of A Concrete Project. Base Preparation, reinforcement, drainage, joints and structural details should follow the actual project requirements.

4. Choose Suitable Form Boards

Form Boards Need To Be Straight Enough To Produce The Edge You Want And Deep Enough To Contain The Concrete. Timber is common for simple slabs because it is easy to cut, stake and brace. Other form systems may be used for larger or repeated work.

Check Boards Before Use. Twisted, badly bowed or split timber can make it difficult to hold a clean line. If the finished concrete edge will be visible, the condition of the form face is especially important.

5. Position The Form Boards

Set Each Board To The Required Line And Height. The top edge often acts as a reference during screeding, so a wavy or uneven top edge can make finishing harder.

Work One Side At A Time, Keeping The Board Tight To The String Line Without Pushing The String Out Of Position. Confirm that the form face is at the correct location, because measuring to the wrong side of the board changes the final slab dimensions.

6. Drive Stakes Outside The Form

Stakes Support The Form Board Against Outward Pressure. Drive them on the outside of the pour area so they do not become trapped in the concrete. Fasten the form board securely to the stakes with suitable screws or nails.

Stake Spacing Depends On Board stiffness, slab depth, soil conditions and the expected pressure. If a form can be pushed out by hand, it needs stronger support before concrete placement.

7. Brace Weak Areas And Corners

Corners, Long Runs And Deep Sections Can Need Extra Bracing. Diagonal braces transfer pressure from the form into the ground or another secure support point. Long unsupported boards are more likely to bow between stakes.

Pay Special Attention To Entry Points Where A Concrete chute, hose or wheelbarrow may contact the forms. Impact and movement can shift a form even if normal concrete pressure would not.

8. Check Level, Fall And Straightness

Use A Suitable Level, Laser Or Other Reliable Method To Check The Top Of The Forms. If The Slab Needs Drainage Fall, confirm that the height difference matches the project intent.

Sight Down Long Form Runs To Check For Bows. Small corrections are easier before concrete arrives than during the pour.

9. Recheck The Diagonals

After Stakes And Braces Are Installed, Recheck The Diagonal Measurements. Fastening and bracing can pull a corner slightly out of square. Correct the geometry before placing reinforcement or concrete.

10. Check Internal Dimensions

Measure The Final Clear Inside Dimensions Between The Form Faces. This is the actual space the concrete will occupy. Also Check Any Steps, recesses, thickened edges or openings that affect the finished shape.

Form Release And Clean Form Faces

Keep The Inside Face Of The Form Clean Before The Pour. Depending On The Form Material And Project requirements, a suitable release treatment may be used to help stripping. Do not apply products randomly; use materials appropriate for the concrete finish and form system.

When To Install Reinforcement

Reinforcement Placement Should Follow The Project Design. Forms are usually established first so reinforcement can be positioned relative to the final concrete boundaries and cover requirements.

Openings, Rebates And Blockouts

Any Opening That Must Remain Free Of Concrete Needs A Secure Blockout Or Internal Form. Examples include service penetrations, recesses and isolated openings. These pieces must be braced so they do not float or move during placement.

Curved Concrete Forms

Curved Forms Need A Flexible Form Face Or Segmented Construction. The tighter the radius, the more support points are generally required to maintain a smooth line.

What To Watch During The Pour

Keep An Eye On Long Form Runs, Corners And Areas Near The Discharge Point. If A Board Starts To Move, stop adding pressure to that area and correct the form before continuing where practical.

Do Not Stand Where A Failed Form Could Release Wet Concrete Toward You. Concrete is heavy, and a moving form can create a sudden hazard.
