Bull floating is one of the first major surface-finishing operations after concrete has been placed and screeded. The bull float is a wide, flat tool mounted on a long handle so the finisher can reach across a slab without walking on fresh concrete. The operation helps smooth ridges left by the screed, correct small surface irregularities and prepare the slab for later finishing.

The American Concrete Institute includes bull floating or darbying in its slab-finishing sequence after striking off, and its flatwork certification material expects finishers to understand when to use a bull float and when floating operations should begin. That sequence matters because bull floating is not a final finishing step. It is an early correction and smoothing operation performed while the concrete is still workable.

What Is A Bull Float?

A bull float is a large rectangular float attached to one or more long handles. The broad face distributes contact over a larger area than a hand float. Depending on the tool, the blade may be magnesium, aluminium, wood or another material suited to the intended finishing method. The long pole allows the operator to push the float out across the slab and pull it back while standing at the edge.

A bull float should not be confused with a fresno or finishing trowel. Although some tools may look similar from a distance, their purposes and timing differ.
