How to Pour Concrete Step by Step

Pouring concrete is more than emptying a truck or mixer into forms. The work begins with excavation, base preparation and formwork, continues through placement and consolidation, and finishes with surface finishing, curing and protection. Every stage affects the quality of the final slab or element.

A well-organised pour should have the crew, tools, access route, concrete supply, finishing method and curing materials ready before concrete arrives. Once placement begins, delays can create cold joints, uneven surfaces or finishing problems.

1. Confirm The Project Dimensions And Concrete Specification

Before the pour, confirm the finished dimensions, elevations, thickness, slope, reinforcement and required concrete mix. Structural slab thickness, footing dimensions and concrete strength should come from the applicable plans, specifications or qualified design guidance.

2. Excavate To The Required Elevation

Remove unsuitable soil, organic material and loose debris. The excavation depth must allow for the concrete thickness plus any required base material. Check drainage and final elevation before moving on, because finishing cannot correct a slab that was placed at the wrong height.

3. Prepare And Compact The Base

The base should provide uniform support. Requirements vary with soil, loads, climate and project type. Where granular base is specified, place it in suitable lifts and compact it appropriately. Soft spots or poorly compacted areas can contribute to settlement and cracking.

4. Build And Brace The Forms

Forms create the edges and elevation of the concrete. Use materials strong enough to resist the pressure of fresh concrete. Brace forms so they remain straight, plumb or properly sloped during placement.

5. Install Reinforcement And Embedded Items

Reinforcing steel, welded wire reinforcement, dowels, anchor bolts, sleeves and other embedded items should be installed according to the plans. Reinforcement must be supported so it remains in the intended position during the pour rather than lying on the ground or being pulled upward casually during placement.

6. Plan The Concrete Delivery And Access

Decide how concrete will reach the forms. Direct truck discharge works when access is good. Wheelbarrows, buggies, conveyors or pumps may be required for restricted locations. Plan the route before concrete arrives so workers are not improvising while the mix is already setting.

7. Check Weather Conditions

Temperature, humidity, wind and rain can affect placing and finishing. Hot, dry weather can speed evaporation and reduce working time, while cold weather can slow setting and require protection against freezing. A weather plan is part of the pour plan.

8. Place Concrete Close To Final Position

Deposit concrete as close as practical to where it will remain. Avoid pushing or dragging large quantities long distances with shovels because that can separate coarse aggregate from mortar and make the slab harder to level.

Work in a logical sequence so fresh concrete remains connected and manageable. Large placements often require coordinated crews handling placement, screeding and finishing at the same time.

9. Avoid Excessive Free Fall And Segregation

Concrete should be placed in a way that limits segregation. Excessive free fall, repeated rehandling or dropping concrete through congested reinforcement can separate the mixture. The appropriate placement method depends on the element and equipment.

10. Consolidate The Concrete

Consolidation removes entrapped air and helps concrete fill spaces around reinforcement and against form faces. Vibration may be required for walls, footings, columns and other formed elements. The equipment and technique should suit the placement.

Do Not Over-Vibrate: Excessive vibration can contribute to segregation. Consolidate enough to fill voids and surround reinforcement without unnecessarily separating the mixture.

11. Strike Off Or Screed The Surface

For slabs, screeding removes excess concrete and brings the surface to final grade. Move the screed across forms, rails or grade references while filling low areas and removing excess material. Maintain the intended slope and elevation throughout the process.

12. Bull Float After Screeding

Bull floating helps smooth ridges, fill minor depressions and prepare the surface for later finishing. This step usually occurs soon after screeding while the concrete is still plastic.

13. Allow Bleed Water To Dissipate

Fresh concrete may release bleed water as solids settle. Do not close the surface while free bleed water is present. Finishing over bleed water can trap moisture beneath the top layer and contribute to surface defects.

14. Edge And Joint The Slab

Use an edger where rounded edges are required. Contraction joints should follow the planned joint layout. Tooled joints are made while concrete is plastic; saw-cut joints are made later at the appropriate time for the saw system and concrete condition.

15. Apply The Final Finish

The final texture should match the intended use. Exterior walkways and driveways often use broom texture for traction. Interior floors may receive a smoother trowelled finish. Decorative systems require their own specialised methods and timing.

16. Begin Curing
