How to Repair a Concrete Driveway

A successful concrete driveway repair starts by identifying why the damage occurred. Cracks can come from drying shrinkage, slab movement, settlement, restraint or loading. Spalling can be linked to impact, corrosion, poor surface quality or moisture-related deterioration. Scaling may affect only the upper surface, while vertical displacement between slabs usually points to support or movement below the driveway.

Because these defects have different causes, they need different repair strategies. Filling every crack with rigid epoxy is not appropriate when a joint must move. Step 1: Decide Whether the Crack Is Moving

A crack that has remained unchanged for a long period is different from one that opens and closes as temperature, moisture or ground conditions change. Rigid repair materials are generally intended for non-moving or structurally bonded cracks, while movement joints and active cracks require systems capable of accommodating movement.

If you are unsure, monitor the crack over time. Photograph it, record the width and note whether there is vertical displacement. A crack associated with sinking, heaving or widening deserves more investigation than a stable drying-shrinkage line.

Step 2: Clean Before You Repair
