How Concrete Mix Proportions Are Scaled

A Ratio Such As Cement : Sand : Aggregate Describes Relative Parts. Add The Parts Together, Then Divide The Target Batch Quantity By The Total Parts To Find The Size Of One Part.

Cement 1 Part Sand 2 Parts Aggregate 4 Parts Total Relative Parts 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 Parts
One Part = Target Quantity ÷ Total Parts • Each Material = Its Ratio Part × One Part

How To Calculate Concrete Mix Proportions

A Concrete Mix Ratio Is A Relative Relationship Between Materials. A Three-Part Ratio Written As Cement : Sand : Aggregate Does Not Automatically State Kilograms Or Cubic Metres. It Simply Says How Large Each Material Share Is Compared With The Others.

To Scale The Ratio, Add All Parts Together. Divide Your Target Quantity By The Total Parts To Find One Part, Then Multiply One Part By The Cement, Sand And Aggregate Numbers.

Basic Mix Ratio Formula

Total Parts Total Parts = Cement Parts + Sand Parts + Aggregate Parts
One Part One Part = Target Quantity ÷ Total Parts
Material Quantity Material Quantity = Material Parts × One Part

Example Of Scaling A 1 : 2 : 4 Ratio

A 1 : 2 : 4 Ratio Has Seven Total Parts. If You Want To Split A Combined Dry Volume Of 0.70 m³ Using That Ratio, One Part Is 0.10 m³. The Relative Split Is 0.10 m³ Cement, 0.20 m³ Sand And 0.40 m³ Aggregate.

1 : 1.5 : 35.518.18%27.27%54.55%
1 : 3 : 61010.00%30.00%60.00%
1 : 2.5 : 58.511.76%29.41%58.82%

Start From A Cement Quantity

If You Already Know The Cement Quantity, Divide It By The Cement Part To Find The Quantity Represented By One Part. Then Multiply That Part Quantity By The Sand And Aggregate Parts.

Start From Cement One Part = Cement Quantity ÷ Cement Parts

Water-Cement Ratio

Water-Cement Ratio Is Usually Expressed As The Mass Of Water Divided By The Mass Of Cement. The Calculator Does Not Choose The Correct Ratio. It Only Multiplies The Cement Mass By The Ratio You Enter.

Water Mass Water (kg) = Cement Mass (kg) × Water-Cement Ratio

Because One Litre Of Water Has A Mass Of About One Kilogram Under Ordinary conditions, the calculated water mass is numerically close to litres for basic planning. Actual batching should still follow the project mix design and account for moisture in aggregates and any admixtures.

Important: A Simple Cement : Sand : Aggregate Ratio Is Not The Same As A Professional Concrete Mix Design. Structural Concrete Performance Depends On Much More Than Relative Dry Parts.

Why Moisture Matters

Sand And Aggregate Can Contain Water. If Their Moisture Is Ignored, The Actual Water Entering The Mix Can Be Higher Than The Added Water Alone. That Can Change Workability And Effective Water-Cement Ratio.

Why Volume And Mass Are Different

A Ratio By Loose Volume Is Not Automatically The Same As A Ratio By Mass. Cement, sand and aggregate have different bulk densities. Keep the basis of the ratio consistent when scaling a mix.

Compare Two Ratios

The Compare Mix Ratios Option Converts Each Mix Into Percentage Shares. This Makes It Easier To See Which Ratio Has A Higher Or Lower Relative Cement, sand or aggregate content without assuming either mix is suitable for a specific use.

What This Calculator Does Not Design

This Tool Does Not Select Compressive Strength, durability class, slump, maximum aggregate size, cement type, admixtures, air content, water-cement ratio or compliance requirements. Use A Project-Specific Mix Design Or Supplier Specification For Structural Concrete.

Better Mix Scaling

Scale A Concrete Ratio In Four Clear Steps

Keep The Ratio Basis, Quantity Basis And Water Assumptions Clear Before You Batch.

1

Choose Ratio

Enter The Cement, Sand And Aggregate Parts From Your Project Mix.

2

Add Parts

Add The Three Numbers To Find The Total Relative Parts.

3

Scale

Divide Your Target Quantity By Total Parts To Find One Part.

4

Check Water

Use Only The Water-Cement Ratio Required By The Actual Mix Design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Concrete Mixture Proportion Calculator FAQs

Simple Answers About Mix Ratios, Batch Scaling, Cement, Sand, Aggregate And Water-Cement Ratio.

How Do I Calculate Concrete Mix Proportions?

Add The Ratio Parts, Divide The Target Quantity By The Total Parts, Then Multiply One Part By Each Material's Ratio Number.

What Does A 1 : 2 : 4 Ratio Mean?

It Means One Relative Part Cement, Two Parts Sand And Four Parts Aggregate. It Does Not By Itself Specify Kilograms Or Cubic Metres.

Can I Start From A Known Cement Quantity?

Yes. Use The Start From Cement Option. The Calculator Scales Sand And Aggregate From The Cement Quantity And Ratio.

Can I Calculate Water From Water-Cement Ratio?

Yes. Enter Cement Mass And A Project-Specified Water-Cement Ratio. The Calculator Multiplies Them To Estimate Water Mass.

Does The Calculator Choose The Correct Mix Ratio?

No. It Only Scales The Ratio You Enter. It Does Not Design Structural Concrete.

Why Are Inputs Blank With A Zero Showing?

The Zero Is Only A Placeholder. When You Type A Number, It Replaces The Placeholder And No Leading Zero Is Added.

Can I Compare Two Mix Ratios?

Yes. The Compare Mix Ratios Option Shows Each Mix As Percentage Shares Of Cement, Sand And Aggregate.

Does The Calculator Account For Aggregate Moisture?

No. Moisture Corrections, admixtures and detailed batching adjustments must come from the actual mix design or batching procedure.

Is A Volume Ratio The Same As A Mass Ratio?

No. Different materials have different densities, so volume and mass ratios should not be treated as interchangeable without proper conversion data.
