Concrete and cement are often used as if they mean the same thing, but technically they refer to different materials. Cement is a powdered hydraulic binder. Concrete is a composite material created by mixing cementitious binder, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and sometimes admixtures or supplementary cementitious materials.

This difference is similar to the relationship between flour and bread: flour is an ingredient, while bread is the finished product made from several ingredients. In the same way, cement is part of concrete, but the finished driveway, footing, wall or slab is concrete.

What Is Cement?

Cement is a finely ground material that reacts with water and develops binding properties. Portland cement is one of the most common hydraulic cements used in concrete. During cement manufacture, carefully proportioned raw materials are processed and heated to produce clinker, which is then ground with additional constituents to create the final cement product.

When cement is mixed with water, chemical reactions known collectively as hydration begin. These reactions form products that bind the solid particles together and allow the material to harden.

What Is Concrete?

Concrete is a composite material. Conventional concrete usually contains cementitious binder, water, sand and coarse aggregate such as gravel or crushed stone. Why Aggregate Is Added To Concrete

Aggregates make up much of the volume of conventional concrete. Fine aggregate fills smaller spaces, while coarse aggregate forms a substantial part of the internal skeleton. Aggregate properties can influence workability, density, stiffness, shrinkage, strength and durability.

Why Water Matters

Water is necessary for cement hydration and workability, but more water is not automatically better. The amount of water relative to cementitious material has a major effect on concrete properties. Excess water can increase porosity and reduce strength or durability, which is why concrete mixture design is more complex than simply combining ingredients by eye.

What Is Cement Paste?

In everyday speech, people often say “cement driveway,” “cement sidewalk” or “cement patio.” The meaning is usually understood, but the technical term is concrete driveway, concrete sidewalk or concrete patio. The installed slab contains cement, but it is not made from cement alone.

Is Cement Stronger Than Concrete?

This question compares an ingredient with a finished composite, so it is not especially useful. Cement paste has its own properties, but structural concrete performance depends on the complete mixture, including water-cementitious ratio, aggregates, curing, air content, admixtures and other factors.

A bag labelled Portland cement is primarily binder and still requires other materials to make conventional concrete.

A driveway is a concrete element. Its performance depends on slab thickness, support, reinforcement or other crack-control measures, jointing, concrete quality, finishing, drainage and curing. Calling the slab “cement” does not change the fact that the construction material is concrete.
