How Concrete Blockwork Quantity Is Calculated

Start With The Net Blockwork Area. Divide That Area By The Effective Face Area Of One Block Including The Joint Allowance, Round Up To Whole Blocks, Then Add Waste Or Breakage.

Net Wall Area ÷ Effective Block Face Wall Length Wall Height
Final Blocks = Round Up(Net Blockwork Area ÷ Effective Block Face Area) + Waste / Breakage

Concrete Blockwork Calculator Guide

How To Calculate Concrete Blockwork

Concrete Blockwork Estimating Starts With Net Wall Area. Measure The Length And Height Of Each Wall, Multiply Them To Get Square Metres, Then Subtract Any Major Openings. Once The Net Area Is Known, Divide By The Effective Face Area Of One Block Including The Joint Allowance.

Simple Block Wall

Wall Area FormulaWall Area (m²) = Wall Length (m) × Wall Height (m)

Wall With Openings

Net Blockwork AreaNet Area = Gross Wall Area − Door Area − Window Area

Use The Opening Area From The Real Drawing Or Measure Width × Height For Each Door And Window. For Several Openings, Add Their Areas Together Before Subtracting Them From The Wall.

Effective Block Face Area

The Physical Block Face And The Mortar Joint Work Together As A Modular Unit. Add The Joint Allowance To The Block Face Length And Height Before Calculating The Effective Face Area.

Effective Block Face((Block Length + Joint) ÷ 1000) × ((Block Height + Joint) ÷ 1000)
Example Effective ModuleEffective Face AreaApprox. Blocks Per m²Blocks For 20 m²
400 × 200 mm0.080 m²12.50250
410 × 210 mm0.086 m²11.61233
300 × 200 mm0.060 m²16.67334
500 × 250 mm0.125 m²8.00160

Waste And Breakage

Add Waste After The Base Block Count Is Rounded Up. Waste Can Cover Cut Blocks, breakage and small layout changes, but the right percentage depends on the wall design and number of corners, openings and special units.

Multiple Walls

For Identical Walls, Calculate One Wall And Multiply By Quantity. If Walls Differ In Length Or Height, Calculate Them Separately And Add The Totals For A Better Take-Off.

Block Piers And Columns

The Pier Option Uses Face Width × Height × Number Of Blockwork Faces × Pier Quantity. It Is A Simple Surface-Area Method And Does Not Replace A Detailed Structural block schedule.

Mortar Planning

Mortar Use Depends On Block Size, joint thickness, workmanship and wall details. Instead Of Assuming One Fixed National Rate, This Calculator Lets You Enter Your Own Mortar Allowance In m³ Per m² Of Blockwork.

Mortar Tip: Use A Supplier Or Project-Specific Mortar Allowance If Available. The Optional Mortar Result Is Only A Planning Figure.

Block Material Cost

The Cost Result Multiplies Final Block Quantity By The Price Per Block You Enter. It Does Not Automatically Include mortar, grout, reinforcement, lintels, freight, labour, scaffolding, render or waterproofing.

Special Units And Structural Details

Real Blockwork Can Need Half Blocks, corner units, bond beams, lintels, reinforced cells and other special products. These should be checked separately against the drawings and product schedule.

What This Calculator Does Not Design

This Tool Does Not Decide Wall Thickness, block strength, reinforcement, footing size, lintels, control joints, retaining wall design or structural requirements. It Is A Quantity Calculator Based On The Dimensions You Enter.

Better Blockwork Take-Offs

Build The Blockwork Quantity In Four Clear Steps

Keeping Area, Block Module, Waste And Special Details Separate Makes The Estimate Easier To Check.

1

Measure

Measure Wall Length, Height And Any Openings.

2

Module

Enter The Actual Block Face Size And Joint Allowance.

3

Calculate

Divide Net Area By Effective Block Face Area.

4

Add Waste

Round Up And Add A Practical Breakage Allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Concrete Blockwork Calculator FAQs

Simple Answers About Wall Area, Block Quantity, Openings, Joint Allowance, Mortar And Cost.

How Do I Calculate Concrete Blockwork?

Calculate Net Wall Area, Divide By The Effective Block Face Area Including The Joint, Round Up, Then Add Waste.

Can I Subtract Doors And Windows?

Yes. Use The Wall With Openings Option And Enter The Total Door And Window Areas.

Why Do I Enter Joint Allowance?

The Joint Helps Create The Effective Modular Block Face Used To Estimate Blocks Per Square Metre.

Can I Estimate Block Piers?

Yes. Use The Block Pier / Column Option For A Simple Face-Area Estimate.

Can I Estimate Mortar?

Yes. Enter Your Own Mortar Allowance In m³ Per m² To Get A Simple Planning Volume.

Why Are Inputs Blank With A Zero Showing?

The Zero Is Only A Placeholder. Typing A Number Replaces It, So No Leading Zero Is Added.

Does The Cost Include Mortar And Labour?

No. The Cost Result Uses Only Final Block Quantity × Price Per Block.

How Much Waste Should I Add?

There Is No Single Percentage For Every Wall. More cuts, corners and openings can increase breakage and waste.

Can I Calculate Multiple Identical Walls?

Yes. Enter One Wall's Length And Height, Then Enter The Quantity.

What Is Included In The PDF?

The PDF Includes Layout, measurements, block size, joint, waste, final blocks, optional mortar planning and block material cost.
