What Is A Concrete Expansion Joint?

A Concrete Expansion Joint, Isolation Joint Or Movement Joint Is A Deliberate Separation Between Concrete Sections Or Between Concrete And Another Structure. The Joint Allows Relative Movement And Helps Prevent The Slabs From Pushing Directly Against Each Other.

These Joints Are Common Around Driveways, patios, paths, building interfaces, columns and other locations where movement needs to be accommodated. The gap may include compressible filler and a flexible surface sealant.

Why Expansion Joint Sealant Fails

Joint Sealant Can Fail Because Of Age, ultraviolet exposure, repeated movement, poor adhesion, incorrect joint preparation, unsuitable sealant depth, standing water, contamination or traffic damage. Sealant may split, peel from one side, sink, harden or pull apart.

Debris Packed Into The Joint

Water Entering The Joint

How To Repair A Concrete Expansion Joint

1. Identify The Joint Type

Before Starting, Confirm That The Gap Is Actually A Movement Or Isolation Joint Rather Than A Saw-Cut control joint, random crack or construction joint. Different joint types can require different repair approaches.

2. Remove Old Sealant

Failed Sealant Should Be Cut And Removed From The Joint Faces. Loose fragments, old filler and debris should also be removed so the new sealant can bond to sound surfaces.

3. Clean The Joint Faces
