How To Calculate Concrete Blocks For A Wall

A concrete block estimate starts with wall face area. Measure the wall length and height, calculate the gross area, subtract any large openings that will not contain masonry and divide the remaining net area by the nominal face area of one concrete masonry unit. The result is the mathematical base count. Because blocks are purchased as whole units, round up, then add a practical allowance for cuts, breakage and changes in the bond pattern.

Concrete masonry is modular. For ordinary block-count estimating, nominal face dimensions are usually more useful than the physical specified dimensions because the nominal module includes the intended mortar-joint space. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association describes the common CMU face module as 8 inches high by 16 inches long and notes that specified dimensions are commonly 3/8 inch less than nominal dimensions to work with a 3/8-inch mortar joint.

Concrete Block Formula

Basic Block QuantityBlocks = Net Wall Area ÷ Nominal Block Face Area

For a nominal 8 × 16 inch face, the coverage is 128 square inches. Divide by 144 to convert that to square feet: 128 ÷ 144 = about 0.8889 square feet per block. One square foot therefore needs about 1.125 standard face modules before waste.

Example: 20-Foot Wall × 8 Feet High

A wall 20 feet long and 8 feet high contains 160 square feet. Divide 160 by 0.8889 and the base count is about 180 blocks. If you choose 5% extra for cuts and damage, 180 × 1.05 = 189 blocks. That is still an equivalent standard-unit estimate. Corner units, bond-beam units, lintel blocks, half units, caps and pilaster units should be counted separately when the layout requires them.

Ordering Tip: Use the percentage as a buffer, not as a substitute for a real takeoff. Count obvious special shapes and difficult cuts from the drawings whenever possible.

How To Subtract Doors And Windows

Start with gross wall area. For each door or window, multiply opening width by opening height. Add those opening areas together and subtract the total from the gross wall face. The remaining square footage is the net masonry area. Small penetrations may not always be worth deducting in a rough estimate because cutting around them can offset the theoretical material saving, but large doors and windows should normally be deducted.

Nominal Versus Actual Concrete Block Dimensions

Nominal dimensions describe the modular space occupied by the unit and its mortar joint. Specified dimensions describe the manufactured unit. For typical ASTM C90 CMU, CMHA explains that specified dimensions are commonly 3/8 inch smaller than nominal dimensions. A nominal 8 × 8 × 16 block is therefore associated with a physical unit roughly 7 5/8 × 7 5/8 × 15 5/8 inches, depending on product and tolerances. For face-count estimating, use the nominal 8 × 16 face module unless your manufacturer specifies a different modular size.

Does Concrete Block Width Change The Count?

Not necessarily. A 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch or 12-inch CMU can use the same nominal 8 × 16 face module. If face length and height stay the same, the flat-wall block count stays the same. Width changes wall thickness, unit weight, grout quantity, thermal characteristics and structural behavior, which are separate from the simple wall-face quantity.

Concrete Block Mortar Calculator Method

Mortar depends on block size, joint thickness, unit geometry, workmanship, waste and the exact mortar product yield. QUIKRETE provides a manufacturer mortar calculator for 8 × 8 × 16 blocks at a 3/8-inch joint and states that its yields are approximate. This page therefore does not force one generic mortar number. Enter the blocks-per-bag coverage from the exact product you intend to buy.

If your mortar product says one bag lays 14 blocks, enter 14. If a different product says 17, enter 17. The result rounds up to whole bags. This approach makes the estimator adaptable to product differences instead of pretending every bag has the same practical yield.

Concrete Block Cost

Enter the current price per block and mortar bag price for a quick material-only total. The cost does not include delivery, pallet deposits, tax, forklift service, grout, reinforcing steel, lintels, flashing, wall ties, caps, scaffolding, labor, footings, excavation or disposal. Use it to compare options and supplier quotes rather than as a complete construction bid.

Courses And Blocks Per Course

Area is fast, but a course check can reveal modular problems. Convert wall height to inches and divide by nominal block height to estimate courses. Convert wall length to inches and divide by nominal block length to estimate blocks per course. An 8-foot wall is 96 inches high, so 96 ÷ 8 = 12 courses. A 20-foot run is 240 inches, so 240 ÷ 16 = 15 blocks per course. Twelve courses × 15 equals 180 blocks, matching the area calculation for a perfectly modular wall.

Why Modular Layout Matters

CMHA modular-layout guidance notes that concrete masonry is coordinated around standard modules so wall lengths, heights and openings can fit bond patterns efficiently. Good modular layout reduces cuts, labor and waste. If dimensions are off-module, the theoretical area-based count may still be correct overall, but the actual job can require partial units and additional waste.

Special Units Need A Separate Takeoff

Standard stretcher blocks are only one part of many walls. Corners, jambs, lintels, bond beams, pilasters, control joints and wall caps can use different unit shapes. An online calculator cannot infer those details from square footage. If the plans identify special units, list them separately and reduce the equivalent standard quantity where appropriate.

Do Not Forget Grout And Reinforcement

Structural CMU walls can include vertically reinforced and grouted cells, horizontal bond beams and reinforced lintels. Grout volume depends on the exact block net area, cell geometry, grout spacing and wall height. Reinforcing steel depends on engineering and code requirements. This calculator intentionally leaves those items out rather than applying a generic assumption that may be wrong for your wall.

Foundation And Retaining Walls

A foundation wall may be easy to count by face area, but it also depends on footing dimensions, reinforcement, waterproofing, drainage, grout and structural details. A retaining wall adds soil pressure, drainage and stability considerations. Use the block count only as a material quantity. Do not use it to decide whether a wall is structurally adequate.
