A Paver Sand Calculator Is Most Useful When It Separates The Sand Beneath The Pavers From The Sand In The Joints. These Materials Are Both Commonly Called “paver sand,” but they have different purposes. Bedding sand creates a uniform layer under the pavers so the units can be placed and compacted into position. Joint sand fills the spaces between pavers and helps the finished surface act as an interlocked system. Because the two quantities are controlled by different measurements, they should not be combined into one generic rule of thumb.
The bedding calculation is geometric: surface area multiplied by the specified compacted depth. Joint sand is less predictable from geometry alone because coverage changes with paver dimensions, joint width, joint depth, edge shape and the sand product. For that reason, this calculator asks for the coverage printed by the joint-sand manufacturer. That approach makes the result easier to match to the exact bag you plan to buy.
Bedding Sand Volume = Paver Area × Compacted Bedding Depth × (1 + Waste %)
For a rectangular patio or walkway, multiply length by width. If the project has several rectangles, calculate each section separately and add the areas together. L-shaped patios can usually be split into two rectangles. Curves, circles and tapered edges can be estimated by dividing the layout into smaller simple shapes. The more accurately the surface area matches the finished edge restraints, the more useful the sand estimate will be.
In US mode, enter length and width in feet and the bedding depth in inches. The calculator converts the result to cubic feet and cubic yards. In metric mode, use metres for length and width and millimetres for the bedding depth. The result is shown in cubic metres. You can switch unit systems before calculating without entering any default example values.
Do not choose a bedding depth simply because a calculator example uses it. Paver installation requirements depend on the pavement system, paver type, application and specification. Use the current project specification, manufacturer instructions or applicable technical guidance to determine the correct compacted bedding layer for your installation.
Sand is loose when delivered and changes volume as it is screeded, disturbed and compacted. The calculator treats the entered bedding depth as the target project layer, then applies the waste or contingency percentage you enter. If a supplier or installation specification describes quantities in a different condition, use that information when deciding how much material to order. Moisture and gradation can also influence bulk density, which is why the weight field is optional and editable.
Joint sand is calculated differently. Enter the finished paver surface area and the coverage per bag stated by the joint-sand manufacturer for the conditions closest to your project. If one bag is stated to cover a certain number of square feet or square metres, the calculator divides the total area by that coverage and rounds up to whole bags. An optional extra percentage can be added when you want a small project-specific allowance.

Coverage charts should be treated as product-specific guidance. Narrow joints between small pavers can use a different quantity from wider joints between larger units. Paver thickness also changes the joint volume. Polymeric sand, conventional joint sand and specialty products may have different installation instructions, compaction steps, watering procedures and refill requirements. Always read the current bag instructions before buying or installing the material.
CMHA technical guidance distinguishes bedding sand requirements from joint sand requirements. Its interlocking concrete pavement resources discuss appropriate sand gradation and installation practices, and its application guidance notes that joint sand may have requirements different from bedding sand. Follow the paver-system specification rather than assuming any bag labeled “sand” is suitable for both locations.

If an estimator, landscape supplier or project drawing already gives you the required sand volume, choose Known Sand Volume. Enter cubic feet in US mode or cubic metres in metric mode. You can then add a waste allowance and, if you know the bulk density and bag weight, estimate mass and whole bags. This mode is also useful when you have combined several irregular areas in another worksheet and only need material conversion.
Sand weight depends on bulk density, which can vary with gradation, mineral composition, moisture and how the material is stored. The calculator therefore leaves density blank. If the supplier gives a bulk density, enter it in pounds per cubic foot for US mode or kilograms per cubic metre for metric mode. The calculator multiplies the waste-adjusted volume by that density. If you also enter a bag weight, it divides the calculated mass by the bag weight and rounds up to whole bags.
This weight result is a planning estimate, not a scale ticket. For bulk delivery, the supplier may sell by weight, volume, scoop, bulk bag or another unit. Ask how the material is actually invoiced and whether the quoted quantity refers to loose, stockpiled or delivered material.
There is no universal waste percentage for every project. Straight rectangular work with accurate edge restraints can be easier to estimate than a layout with curves, many cuts, steps or multiple small areas. Screeding loss, uneven base elevations and cleanup can also change the quantity. The calculator leaves waste at zero until you enter a value, so you can choose an allowance appropriate to your project instead of automatically adding a generic percentage.
Patio projects are usually straightforward to measure because the surface is often rectangular or can be divided into rectangles. Calculate the paver footprint, confirm the bedding layer required for the selected paver system, and use the exact joint-sand product coverage. If the patio includes a border course, different paver thicknesses or a step, check whether those details change the bedding layer or joint conditions.
Long narrow walkways are calculated from total length × average finished width. Where the path curves, use several shorter sections or measure the design area from the plan. Do not use the excavation width if it is wider than the actual paver surface unless the bedding sand is intentionally placed across that full width. The material layer should match the construction detail rather than a rough trench measurement.
Vehicular pavements can require a different base design and construction approach from a pedestrian patio. A sand volume calculator cannot determine whether the pavement is structurally suitable for traffic. CMHA's interlocking concrete pavement construction guidance explains that base thickness depends on factors such as traffic, soil, drainage, moisture and climate. Use the project design and current technical requirements for driveway or vehicular applications.
The compacted base below the bedding layer is a separate material and is often much thicker than the bedding sand. If you need to calculate base aggregate, use a separate gravel or paver-base calculation based on the specified base depth. Do not increase the bedding-sand quantity to compensate for a base that is low or poorly graded. The purpose of the bedding layer is to create the specified setting bed, not to correct major base elevations.
Polymeric joint sand contains binders that activate according to the manufacturer's installation instructions. Coverage should come from the exact product because joint dimensions and paver geometry strongly affect consumption. Follow the manufacturer's directions for sweeping, compaction, surface cleaning, watering and weather conditions. Overestimating coverage can leave a project short; applying too much or leaving residue on the paver face can create other installation problems.
Conventional dry joint sand is swept into the joints and typically consolidated through the paver-compaction process. The appropriate sand grading and refill procedure should follow the project specification. Some systems may require repeated sweeping and compaction until joints are properly filled. The calculator only estimates the purchase quantity; it does not determine whether a particular sand complies with the required gradation.
Sand performance is not controlled by quantity alone. CMHA publishes technical material on bedding-sand selection for interlocking concrete pavement. Those resources discuss gradation, fines and drainage-related performance considerations. For a specified project, use the material standard named in the plans or manufacturer guidance. Do not substitute a different sand solely because its price or bulk density is similar.

A 20 ft × 10 ft rectangular area is 200 ft². If an illustrative 1-inch compacted bedding depth is entered, the geometric volume is 200 × (1 ÷ 12) = 16.67 ft³. Divide by 27 to convert that to approximately 0.62 yd³ before any waste allowance. The correct depth for a real project must come from the selected paver system or specification.
If a project has 300 ft² of pavers and the exact joint-sand product states 60 ft² per bag for the relevant joint conditions, the base calculation is 300 ÷ 60 = 5 bags. If you enter an additional allowance, the calculator applies it before rounding up. Manufacturer coverage always takes priority over this example.
