How To Convert Cubic Feet To Tonnes

A cubic foot is a unit of volume. A metric tonne is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms. Because volume and mass describe different physical properties, there is no single universal number that converts every cubic foot into tonnes. The missing information is density: how much mass a particular material contains in a given volume.

The correct workflow is to convert cubic feet into cubic metres, multiply the cubic metres by the material density in kilograms per cubic metre, and then divide kilograms by 1,000 to obtain metric tonnes. The exact cubic-foot-to-cubic-metre factor is 0.028316846592.

Why Density Changes The Answer

Two materials can occupy exactly the same 10 cubic feet but have very different weights. A dense concrete mix will weigh far more than a lightweight fill or insulation material occupying the same space. If the material is safety-critical, structural or commercially significant, do not substitute a generic online density for project data.

Metric Tonnes Versus US Tons

This page uses the metric tonne, symbol t, which equals exactly 1,000 kilograms. A US short ton and an imperial long ton are different units. If a supplier quote or project document says “tons,” check which ton definition is intended before comparing values.

Worked Example: 20 ft³ Of Concrete

Assume a planning density of 2,400 kg/m³. First convert 20 ft³ to cubic metres: 20 × 0.028316846592 = 0.56633693184 m³. Multiply by 2,400 kg/m³ to obtain about 1,359.21 kg. Divide by 1,000 to obtain about 1.35921 tonnes.

Worked Example: 2 Tonnes To Cubic Feet

Assume the same example density of 2,400 kg/m³. Two tonnes equals 2,000 kg. Divide by 2,400 to obtain 0.833333 m³. Divide by 0.028316846592 and the result is approximately 29.43 ft³.
