A cinder block calculator starts with wall area. Multiply wall length by wall height to get square feet, subtract any large door or window openings, then divide the remaining wall area by the area covered by one block module. The block module includes the face size of the block plus the horizontal and vertical mortar-joint allowances you enter.
All numeric fields are intentionally empty. The faint 0 is only a placeholder, so typing 5 gives 5 instead of 05. Reset clears the actual values and returns the faint placeholder to each field.
Blocks = Net Wall Area ÷ Block Module AreaBecause block products and joint practices vary, this calculator does not force one block size. You can enter the face dimensions you want to estimate with. If your wall uses a special architectural, split-face, half-height or other masonry unit, use the actual dimensions from the project or manufacturer.
A 20 ft × 8 ft wall has 160 ft² of gross face area. If a door and window together occupy 30 ft², the net masonry area is 130 ft². Only that net area should be divided by the block module area.
Mortar joints form part of the masonry module. If a block face is entered as 15.625 in long by 7.625 in high and the joints are entered as 0.375 in, the module becomes 16 in by 8 in. That module covers 128 square inches, or 0.8889 ft², which works out to about 1.125 blocks per square foot before waste.

Openings reduce the number of blocks required. Measure the total opening area in square feet and subtract it from the gross wall area. If there are several openings, add their areas together first. Small penetrations may not materially change the order, while large doors and windows usually should be deducted.
For several identical walls, use the Multiple Walls option. It multiplies one wall area by the number of walls. When wall lengths or heights differ, calculate each wall group separately for better accuracy.
The Custom Block option lets you enter a wall and a different block face size in the same calculation. This is useful for specialty CMU, decorative masonry, half blocks or other modular units. The entered mortar joints are still added to the custom block dimensions.
There is no single waste percentage for every masonry wall. Straight walls with few cuts can be efficient, while corners, returns, pilasters, openings and pattern changes can increase cuts and breakage. The calculator lets you enter your own percentage instead of assuming one value.
Mortar usage depends on block size, joint thickness, joint profile, waste and the mortar product or mix. For that reason, this calculator asks you to enter a blocks-per-bag yield. If you leave the yield blank, it will not invent a mortar-bag count.

The term “cinder block” is often used informally for concrete masonry units, but modern masonry products vary in composition, density, dimensions, strength and configuration. The safest estimating approach is to use the actual product dimensions and unit types specified for your wall.
