The core calculation is straightforward: measure the paving area, convert the required base depth to metres, multiply area by depth, then add any project-specific allowance before converting cubic metres to tonnes. The practical part is making sure the measurements, depth and material density match the actual project.
For a rectangular patio, path or courtyard, multiply length by width to get square metres. For an irregular area, break the site into smaller rectangles or other simple shapes and add the areas together. If the total area is already known, use the Area × Depth option. Circular paving can be estimated with the Circle mode. If a designer, quantity surveyor or supplier has already given you a compacted cubic-metre requirement, use Known Volume.

Enter the supplier-stated bulk density for the exact road base, crushed rock, crusher dust blend or other base material you intend to buy. If you leave density at zero, the calculator can still show cubic metres but the tonnes result will remain zero.
The required material is project-specific. Paver systems can use graded crushed rock, road base or other compactable aggregates beneath a separate bedding layer, but the correct specification depends on the paver system, local conditions, design loads and construction documents. This calculator does not select the material. Use the product and grading required by your project documents or supplied by the paving professional.
The structural base and the bedding layer perform different jobs. Do not combine them automatically into one depth unless the project documents specifically call for that. Calculate the compacted base material separately, then estimate bedding material separately using its own thickness and density. For a simple rectangular patio, measure the full paved footprint rather than only the visible centre area. Include edges that will receive the same base construction. If the patio has steps, planters or sections that do not receive base material, calculate those areas separately and subtract them only when the geometry is clear. For multiple identical paved areas, use the quantity field instead of repeating the calculation.
Paths often change width or curve around landscaping. Divide a variable-width path into manageable sections and calculate each section separately. For a consistent straight path, length × width × depth is sufficient. If you already have a measured surface area from a plan or site-measurement app, the Area × Depth option can be faster.
Driveway paving can carry substantially different loads from a pedestrian path or patio, so the required base construction should come from the relevant design, manufacturer guidance, contractor or engineer. Additional material may be needed because excavation is not perfectly level, edges are wider than planned, the delivered product compacts, or small quantities are lost during transport and spreading.
