How To Use A Concrete CFT Calculator

A Concrete CFT Calculator works out concrete volume in cubic feet. CFT is a common construction shorthand for cubic feet, and it is useful whenever project measurements are taken from drawings, tape measurements or legacy specifications written in feet and inches. The important idea is that CFT is a volume, not an area. A slab may cover a certain number of square feet, but the quantity of concrete depends on the thickness as well. A trench may have a long plan length, but its width and depth determine how much space the concrete actually occupies.

This page keeps the cubic-foot result visible while also converting the same amount to cubic metres, cubic yards and litres. That matters because different parts of a concrete job can use different units. A drawing may show feet and inches, a supplier quote may use cubic metres, a U.S.-style reference may use cubic yards, and bagged concrete data may describe mixed yield in litres. Converting from one geometric calculation helps reduce repeated manual conversions and makes it easier to compare quantities.

The calculator does not assume a project thickness, waste percentage, concrete rate or packaged-concrete yield. Enter the values that belong to your actual project. This is especially important for thickness: changing a slab from 4 inches to 6 inches increases the volume by 50% when length and width stay the same. Small measurement assumptions can become large ordering differences over a wide area.

What Does CFT Mean In Concrete?

CFT means cubic feet, written as ft³. One cubic foot is the volume of a cube measuring one foot long, one foot wide and one foot high. In concrete estimating, CFT therefore describes three-dimensional space. A 1 ft × 1 ft × 1 ft block is 1 CFT. A 10 ft × 5 ft slab that is 0.5 ft thick is 25 CFT because 10 × 5 × 0.5 = 25.

Do not confuse CFT with square feet. Square feet (ft²) measures surface area. Cubic feet (ft³) measures volume. To move from square feet to concrete CFT, multiply the area by the concrete thickness in feet. If thickness is in inches, divide by 12 first.

How To Calculate Concrete CFT From Feet And Inches

When all three dimensions are already in feet, multiply them directly. When thickness or another dimension is in inches, convert the inch portion to feet by dividing by 12. For example, 4 inches is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft. A 10 ft × 6 ft slab at 4 inches thick therefore has a base volume of about 20 ft³.

The Feet + Inches mode accepts separate feet and extra-inches boxes for length and width, which is useful for real tape measurements such as 12 ft 7 in. It combines those values internally as 12 + 7/12 feet. Thickness is entered in inches because shallow concrete work is often easier to describe that way. The calculation stays transparent: every measurement becomes feet before the three dimensions are multiplied.

Measurement Tip: Measure the formed or excavated space that will actually receive concrete. Nominal project dimensions can differ from the real void if excavation is wider, the subbase has low areas or edge thickening is included.

Concrete CFT From Square Feet And Thickness

If you already know surface area in square feet, use the Area + Thickness mode. This is useful for simple slabs, floors, paths and pads where area has already been measured by another tool or taken from a plan. Convert thickness from inches to feet, then multiply by square feet.

Convert Concrete CFT To Cubic Metres

The exact conversion used by the calculator is 1 ft³ = 0.028316846592 m³. Multiply cubic feet by that factor to obtain cubic metres. The reverse calculation divides cubic metres by the same factor. For quick field estimates you may see rounded factors, but keeping the full conversion factor inside the calculator reduces conversion drift across larger volumes.

One cubic yard contains exactly 27 cubic feet because a yard is 3 feet and volume scales in three dimensions: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27. Therefore, divide CFT by 27 to convert concrete volume to cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by 27 to go in the opposite direction.

CFT To Litres For Bagged Concrete

Litres are useful when comparing a project volume with the stated mixed yield of packaged concrete. Because 1 m³ equals 1000 litres, one cubic foot equals approximately 28.3168 litres. The calculator converts the allowance-adjusted CFT to litres, then divides by the yield you enter in litres per bag. It always rounds the bag count upward because partial packaged bags are not normally a practical purchasing unit.

Do not estimate bag count from bag weight alone. A 20 kg bag is a dry product mass, while concrete yield is a mixed volume. Different products can have different formulations and yields. Concrete CFT For Slabs And Pads

A rectangular slab is the simplest CFT calculation: length × width × thickness, with all values in feet. Measure the concrete area at the formwork, not only from a rough nominal description. If the slab contains thickened edges, beams, steps or isolated pads, calculate those extra volumes separately unless they are already included in the main dimensions.

For a driveway or path, divide irregular geometry into simple sections. A long walkway can be broken into rectangles. A driveway that flares near the road can be separated into a main rectangle and one or more smaller shapes. Calculate each section, then add the CFT values. Concrete CFT For Footings And Trenches

Footings and trenches also use length × width × depth. Their challenge is usually not the formula but the excavation. Soil can break away, trench widths can vary and bottoms can be uneven. Measure representative widths and depths along the run rather than assuming every section is identical. When dimensions vary materially, split the footing into several sections and add their CFT.

Do not treat the calculator as a structural design tool. Required footing width, depth, reinforcement and concrete specification depend on the actual building or engineering requirements. This page only converts dimensions into quantity.

Concrete CFT For Round Holes And Cylinders

Post holes, piers and round pads use the volume of a cylinder. Convert the diameter to feet, divide by two to obtain radius, square the radius, multiply by π, then multiply by depth. The Round Hole mode accepts diameter in inches and depth as feet plus extra inches because those are convenient field measurements.

The calculation uses the full cylindrical hole. If a large post or other object displaces a meaningful amount of concrete, calculate its volume separately and deduct it only when that is appropriate for your project. How Much Extra Concrete Should Be Added?

A mathematical volume assumes perfect geometry. Real forms, trenches and excavations are rarely perfect. An allowance can cover small measurement differences, rough ground, minor spillage and other site variability. There is no universal percentage that fits every project, so the calculator leaves the field empty and lets you enter the allowance you want.

Better measurement should come before a larger contingency. If a project has clearly defined dimensions and accurate formwork, you may choose a smaller allowance. If excavation is irregular, split the work into more measured sections rather than masking uncertainty with one large percentage. Understanding Order Rounding

Concrete suppliers may apply minimum order quantities or practical increments. The calculator therefore offers optional rounding in cubic metres after the allowance has been applied. Concrete Cost From CFT

If you enter an A$/m³ concrete rate, the calculator multiplies it by the rounded order volume. If no rounding is selected, it uses the allowance-adjusted cubic metres. This produces a concrete-only material estimate, not a complete project budget. Labour, pumping, delivery surcharges, short-load fees, reinforcement, base preparation, formwork, excavation, finishing, permits, access constraints and disposal can all affect total project cost.

For cost planning, use a current supplier quote rather than an old online average. The calculator intentionally leaves the price field empty so it does not imply a national fixed rate.

Worked Example: Slab In Feet And Inches

Suppose a slab measures 18 ft long, 10 ft wide and 5 inches thick. Convert 5 inches to feet: 5 ÷ 12 = 0.4167 ft. The base CFT is 18 × 10 × 0.4167 ≈ 75 ft³. That volume converts to about 2.124 m³ and 2.778 yd³. If you add an 8% allowance, the planning quantity becomes about 81 ft³, or 2.294 m³. Worked Example: Area And Thickness

Assume a floor area of 240 ft² with a 4-inch thickness. Divide 4 by 12 to obtain 0.3333 ft. Multiply 240 × 0.3333 to get 80 ft³. The same base quantity is about 2.265 m³ or 2.963 yd³. If the floor contains thickened strips or local pads, calculate those additional volumes separately and add them to the base floor volume.

Worked Example: Round Post Holes

Consider eight round holes, each 12 inches in diameter and 3 feet deep. A 12-inch diameter is 1 foot, so the radius is 0.5 ft. One hole is π × 0.5² × 3 ≈ 2.356 ft³.   • Using square feet as cubic feet: area must be multiplied by thickness.
  • Multiplying feet by inches directly: convert inches to feet before the volume calculation.
  • Ignoring quantity: repeated pads, holes or identical sections must be multiplied by their count.
  • Mixing diameter and radius: the cylinder formula uses radius, which is half the diameter.
  • Rounding too early: keep more precision during conversion and round the final planning result.

Measuring Irregular Concrete Work

Irregular projects should be divided into smaller shapes that are easier to measure. For a path with changing width, split the length into sections and calculate each rectangle. For a slab with a cut-out, calculate the full rectangle and subtract the cut-out volume if it truly will not contain concrete. For curved areas, use circle or sector geometry where appropriate. The aim is to make the geometry reflect the space being filled rather than forcing an irregular project into one inaccurate rectangle.
